I am writing an op-ed piece about this very topic for Hip-Hop Wired right now. I think there needs to be a stronger correlation between family, biological and not, within the community. Men need to be men in the lives of the younger generation, women can't do it alone, even though they have been programmed to think otherwise. That is no diss to women either, because they have been the one's holding us up as a people, even though we continue to not hold them in high esteem. I also think that there needs to be a stronger connection as a community with culture and tradition. That is going to prove difficult considering Black people's history since arriving in America, but it is not impossible. The spirit of our ancestors is alive in the breaks and beats that we vibe to daily in Hip-Hop, even though some of the lyrics are questionable at best. We as a people have to take a stand as declare that "today is the day that we will change for the better." We have to restore value to the family unit, teaching the importance of those who came before you and of the impact you have on those that are to come after. Restore the sanctity of marriage as well as the importance of being a "thinker" as opposed to a "doer." The last should help to curb senseless violence, accompanied by parental involvement.
Al these problems you mention are a result of the early move. Say at 17 you get a you girl pregnant, you now have a child who will probably be raised by grandma, clothed by aunts (and at times harrassed by uncles) - Who may grow up not having the value, emotional balance and spiritual guidance she/he needs. Chances are at 16 she/ he too will seek love elsewhere since she/he was born in a family structure that provided food clothes, tv and no love values and individual attention. this become a circle of young teenage parents looking for themselves while looking after children.
then there is an issue of affordability of education, role models and spiritual development. I agree we need to tackle this problem one at a time but we need to be more responsible as 'black man and women' Take communal responsibility for safe communities values, and create environments that protect and nurture children.
